PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION:

SmartSonic Transmitters consist of two main components:

  • The Electronics
  • The Sensor (Transducer)

The transducer contains a piezoelectric crystal that converts an electrical signal into acoustic (sound) waves. These acoustic waves are directed through the air toward the process media surface. They are then reflected off of this surface and returned tot eh transducer. The piezoelectric crystal then converts the received waves into an electrical signal.

The time difference between the transmitted wave and the received wave is proportional to the distance from the face of the transducer to the process media surface. The distance is used by the electronics to calculate level or open channel flow in the units selected by the operator.

KMD MAGNETOSTRICTIVE TRANSMITTER

The Model KMD is an advanced, state-of-the-art, two-wire, Magnetostrictive-based level transmitter suitable for a wide range of process applications. The latest microprocessor technology allows this instrument to consistently and reliably measure the level of your process fluid. Built-in Hart® Communications allows for remote calibration and diagnostics. The optional onboard display and keypad is for local display and calibration.

The model KMD can measure overall level, interface level and process temperature. Up to two 4-20mA output loops are available to track any two of these three variables. The standard single chamber, or optional dual chamber enclosures are explosion proof for hazardous locations. The Model KMD is also intrinsically safe when used with the appropriate safety barriers.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION:

The sensor portion of the Model KMD transmitter consists of three concentric tubes. The outer tube (pipe) protects the inner tubes from the process evironment. This outer tube is constructed of a material that is compatible with the process media being measured. The next tube contains a resistive temperature device (RTD) for accurate temperature measurement.

The innermost tube is the heart of the system. This tube is known was the waveguide. It contains a formed wire made of a proprietary Magnetostrictive material. The main electronics gernerates a low current pulse, creating an electromagnetic field around the waveguide. When this electromagnetic interacts with magnetic field from the magnets in the float, a twist in the waveguide occurs. This twist is detected in the main electronics as a return pulse. The time between the initial pulse and the return pulse is measured, and is used to determine the exact position of the float, thereby providing a very accurate level measurement.

THERMAL DIFFERENTIAL LEVEL & FLOW SWITCHES

KENCO’s Thermal Differential Switches are designed for a wide range of flow and level applications. These switches can be used to direct either the overall liguid level or a liquid-liquid interface. They can also be used to detect a specific flow rate or flow/no flow condition in liquids and gasses.

PRINCIPAL OF OPERATION:

The sensor consists of (2) Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD’s). One RTD measures the temperature of the fluid around the sensor. The other RTD is self-heated. This provides a temperature differential between the the two RTD’s.

In a level application, the thermal conductivity of the liquid level is higher than the gaseous layer above the liquid. When the RTD’s make contact with the liquid, there is a cooling effect with the liquid absorbing the heat from the heated RTD. This reduces the temperature differential increases, causing the relay to reset. This will also work in a liquid-liquid interface when the two liquids have different thermal conductivity (ex. oil and water).

In a flow application, there is a temperature differential during a no-flow or low-flow condition (the actual setpoint is adjusted during the calibration procedure). As the flow rate increases, the temperature between the RTD’s decreases, causing the relay to change state. When the flow rate decreases, the temperature differential increases, causing the relay to reset.

Magna-Site™ MAGNETIC LEVEL GAUGE

The KENCO Magna-Site™ is a magnetic liquid level indicator used to determine the volume of liquid contained within a vessel. Because the Magna-Site™ eliminates the need for glass, high pressure applications and hazardous locations are protected from the danger of a chemical spill due to glass failure.

The KENCO Magna-Site™ utilizes three major components: the gauge housing chamber, the magnetic float and the magnetic flag assembly.

The gauge housing chamber is mounted adjacent to the side of the vessel. It is constructed to withstand the same temperatures and pressures as the tank itself.

It is equipped with the appropriate tank mounting connections for easy installation and to allow equalization of liquid level in tank and gauge.

Inside the gauge housing chamber is the magnetic float, which contains radially-positioned magnets to provide a 360° magnetic-flux field. Each float is internally weighted based on specific gravity so that the liquid level in the gauge coincides with the location of the magnets inside the float.

Attached to the gauge housing chamber is the magnetic flag assembly. This is the visual means of liquid level indication for the KENCO Magna-Site™. The assembly is made up of a series of bi-colored fluorescent flags. As the magnetic float rises and falls with the liquid level in the gauge housing chamber, a magnet embedded in each flag reacts to the 360° magnetic flux of the float. This magnetic interaction causes each flag to rotate 180°. The flags below the magnetic flux of the float will flip to fluorescent green, while those flags above the float level remain steel gray.

The Environmental Protection Gauge (EPG) is easy to install. It installs just like tubular glass and is designed to replace your existing tubular glass. It will eliminate glass breakage and stop costly spills. The metal end connection of the gauge inserts into the valve stuffing box thus eliminating two common points for glass breakage:

  • Overtightening of the glass packing
  • Breakage of glass at the packing nuts from impact to the gauge

FEATURES:

The packing nut on the tubular valve tightens around the metal nozzles of the EPG gauge, not glass! Nozzles match the O.D. of 5/8″ glass or 3/4″ glass.

The clear polycarbonate shield allows 360° visibility. Unlike expanded metal protection, the fluid level is not obstructed. The EPG Level Gauge is also priced so that it is an economical alternative to expanded metal.

17000 BULK TANK GAUGEThe 17000 Gauge functions as a level indicator and also serves as a pump setting gauge. 4400 CLOSE-MOUNT LEVEL GAUGEAPPLICATION:The KENCO close-mount level gauge is ideally suited for applications in which the level gauge must be mounted with a minimum of protrusion from the tank. Typical applications include offshore or corrosive atmospheres, packaged hydraulic equipment, steel mill pumps, surge tanks, radiator fluid levels.The design of these gauges affords easy installation. Simply install the male thread adapter into the tank connection and then slide the gauge housing over these adapters and bolt gauge into place. KMR & KHR REFLEX LEVEL GAUGES AND VALVESKENCO Flat Glass Gauges are used where direct visual observation of process fluids is required. These gauges are suitable for a wide range of applications with pressures up to 4000psig @ 100oF, and temperatures up to 750oF @ 2300psig. KENCO gauges are available in a wide variety of construction materials, connections and other options to meet most specifications.THERE ARE FIVE MAIN COMPONENTS TO ALL FLAT GLASS GAUGES:

  1. Chamber
    Center of the gauge, and is the part that primarily contains the process fluid. It is machined from bar stock. The gasket seat is recessed for lateral support, and easy positioning.
  2. Glass
    Provides the visual interface between the process fluid and the outside.
  3. Cover
    Protects the glass, and provides the compression surface for sealing the gauge. The cushion seat is surfaced for lateral support and easy positioning.
  4. Gasket/Cushion
    Provides for a seal between the chamber and glass (gasket), and protects the glass from mechanical stresses from the cover (cushion). For a given gauge, the gasket and cushion are normally the same material.
  5. Bolts/Studs/Nuts
    Provides a uniform compression load to the gauge for pressure sealing.

REFLEX STYLE LEVEL GAUGE

Reflex gauges have a single piece of glass, mounted on one side of the chamber. This piece of glass is flat on the outside, and has a series of prisms on the inside, facing the process fluid. When light strikes the portion of the glass covered by a liquid, the light is reflected from the back of the chamber. This area appears “black”. When light strikes the glass where no liquid is present, the prisms reflect the light directly out of the gauge. This area appears “silvery”. Reflex gauges provide an excellent way to measure clear, or difficult to see fluids. The “silvery”/”black” interface is easy to see from several feet away.

WHY USE FLAT GLASS GAUGES

Flat Glass Gauges have been in use for over 100 years. They give you the ability to directly view the process fluid under temperature/pressure conditions that would render most other level technologies useless.Their construction is very robust, and reliable. They define the term “simple to use”…after installation, the only tool you will need is your eyes. Flat Glass Gauges are relatively inexpensive as compared to most other level technologies.

OTHER FEATURES:

  • They do not need electrical power to operate. This can be a great advantage in the case of a power outage.
  • Simple to install…no calibration is necessary.
  • Can be used as a reference to check, or calibrate, other level technologies.
  • Pressure rating from vacuum to 4000psig.
  • Temperature rating from -425oF to 750oF
  • Not affected by the chemical or electrical properties of the process liquid. Specific gravity, dielectric, conductivity, surface turbulence, vapor, foam, etc. no longer needs to be considered.

FLAT GLASS GAUGES Vs. TUBULAR GLASS GAUGES

KENCO offers a wide range of Flat Glass Gauges and Tubular Gauges. With all of those choices, one of the basic questions is: Should I use Flat Glass or Tubular Glass Gauges? The answer is fairly simple. If the process pressure is under 500psig and the process temperature is under 400oF, tubular style gauges should be considered. KENCO tubular gauges shield the glass on all four sides to virtually eliminate glass breakage, and tubular gauges are even more cost effective than flat glass gauges. Regardless of the style chosen, KENCO’s high quality gauges will provide you with many years of reliable service.

MEDIUM PRESSURE FLAT GLASS GAUGES

KENCO Medium Pressure Flat Glass Gauges are versatile enough for most common process conditions. Standard carbon steel gauges meet the requirements of NACE MR0175. Unlike other manufacturers, there is not additional charge for NACE.

All materials meet or exceed ASTM specifications. Model KMR Reflex Gauges can reach process pressures up to 3000psig. Model KMT Transparent Gauges can handle pressures up to 2000psig.

While these gauges are not specifically designed for steam service, the Model KMR gauges will perform at saturated steam pressures up to 300WSP. The Model KMT will perform at saturated steam pressures up to 600WSP, depending upon gauge size. Mica shields are recommended for Model KMT when used in steam. Shields cannot be used with Reflex Gauges.

HIGH PRESSURE FLAT GLASS GAUGES

KENCO High Pressure Flat Glass Gauges have a superior rugged design for the most demanding process conditions. Standard carbon steel gauges meet the requirements of NACE MR0175. Unlike other manufaturers, there is no additional charge for NACE.

All materials meet or exceed ASTM specifications. Model KHR Reflex Gauges can reach pressures up to 4000psig. Model KHT Transparent Gauges can handle pressures up to 3000psig.

FROST PROOF EXTENSION

The KENCO Frost-proof Extension is used in low temperature applications where frost has a tendency to build up on the gauge. This extension prevents frost from covering the window, maintaining visibility at all times.

The Frost-proof Extension consists of clear, plastic block that is in direct contact with the glass, and extends beyond the cover so that frost buils-up does not block the glass.

Mounting is easy, and can be added to any Reflex or Transparent gauge in the field. The extension can be installed or removed for cleaning while the gauge is in service.

GAUGE GLASS OPTIONS

KENCO supplies tempered borosilicate glass as standard in all Flat Glass Gauges. Borosilicate glass is suitable for most chemicals, and is good for temperature ranging from -425°F to 600°F(Glass Rating Only). The tempering process improves the thermal shock resistance of the glass.

Aluminosilcate glass is offered as an option for higher temperature applications. It offers less thermal expansion, as compared to borosilicate glass. Aluminosilicate glass is good for temperatures ranging from -425°F to 800°F(Glass Rating Only). However, due to the added cost, it is only recommended for temperatures from -600°F to 800°F.

GLASS SHIELDS

For corrosive or steam applications, KENCO offers shields to extend the life of the glass in Transparent gauges. The shields are made from either PCTFE (Kel-F) or Mica. Mica shields are recommended for steam service. Kel-F shields should be used in corrosive fluid applications. The shield is placed on the process side of the glass. Shields can only be used with Transparent gauges.

THERMAL INSULATORS AND GAUGE SCALES

KENCO offers a wide variety of methods to heat or cool gauges in order to maintain the temperature of the process in the gauge. Internal & external heating/cooling tubes, thermal jackets, and insulation blankets are available. Gauge scales can be supplied to provide a numerical reference to the level being measured. KMT & KHT TRANSPARENT LEVEL GAUGES & VALVESKENCO Flat Glass Gauges are used where direct visual observation of process fluids is required. These gauges are suitable for a wide range of applications with pressures up to 4000psig @ 100oF, and temperatures up to 750oF @ 2300psig. KENCO gauges are available in a wide variety of construction materials, connections and other options to meet most specifications.THERE ARE FIVE MAIN COMPONENTS TO ALL FLAT GLASS GAUGES:

  1. Chamber
    Center of the gauge, and is the part that primarily contains the process fluid. It is machined from bar stock. The gasket seat is recessed for lateral support, and easy positioning.
  2. Glass
    Provides the visual interface between the process fluid and the outside.
  3. Cover
    Protects the glass, and provides the compression surface for sealing the gauge. The cushion seat is surfaced for lateral support and easy positioning.
  4. Gasket/Cushion
    Provides for a seal between the chamber and glass (gasket), and protects the glass from mechanical stresses from the cover (cushion). For a given gauge, the gasket and cushion are normally the same material.
  5. Bolts/Studs/Nuts
    Provides a uniform compression load to the gauge for pressure sealing.

TRANSPARENT STYLE LEVEL GAUGE

Transparent gauges have two pieces of glass on opposite sides of the chamber. Light enters the gauge from one side, and the level is viewed from the other. Transparent gauges are useful when the actual liquid characteristics need to be seen. They are also commonly used for liquid-liquid interfaces. Mica shields can be used in transparent gauges to protect the glass in steam environments. Kel-F shields should be used in corrosive environments.

WHY USE FLAT GLASS GAUGES

Flat Glass Gauges have been in use for over 100 years. They give you the ability to directly view the process fluid under temperature/pressure conditions that would render most other level technologies useless.Their construction is very robust, and reliable. They define the term “simple to use”…after installation, the only tool you will need is your eyes. Flat Glass Gauges are relatively inexpensive as compared to most other level technologies.

OTHER FEATURES:

  • They do not need electrical power to operate. This can be a great advantage in the case of a power outage.
  • Simple to install…no calibration is necessary.
  • Can be used as a reference to check, or calibrate, other level technologies.
  • Pressure rating from vacuum to 4000psig.
  • Temperature rating from -425oF to 750oF
  • Not affected by the chemical or electrical properties of the process liquid. Specific gravity, dielectric, conductivity, surface turbulence, vapor, foam, etc. no longer needs to be considered.

FLAT GLASS GAUGES Vs. TUBULAR GLASS GAUGES

KENCO offers a wide range of Flat Glass Gauges and Tubular Gauges. With all of those choices, one of the basic questions is: Should I use Flat Glass or Tubular Glass Gauges? The answer is fairly simple. If the process pressure is under 500psig and the process temperature is under 400oF, tubular style gauges should be considered. KENCO tubular gauges shield the glass on all four sides to virtually eliminate glass breakage, and tubular gauges are even more cost effective than flat glass gauges. Regardless of the style chosen, KENCO’s high quality gauges will provide you with many years of reliable service.

MEDIUM PRESSURE FLAT GLASS GAUGES

KENCO Medium Pressure Flat Glass Gauges are versatile enough for most common process conditions. Standard carbon steel gauges meet the requirements of NACE MR0175. Unlike other manufacturers, there is not additional charge for NACE.

All materials meet or exceed ASTM specifications. Model KMR Reflex Gauges can reach process pressures up to 3000psig. Model KMT Transparent Gauges can handle pressures up to 2000psig.

While these gauges are not specifically designed for steam service, the Model KMR gauges will perform at saturated steam pressures up to 300WSP. The Model KMT will perform at saturated steam pressures up to 600WSP, depending upon gauge size. Mica shields are recommended for Model KMT when used in steam. Shields cannot be used with Reflex Gauges.

esp st series ESP / ST SERIES LEVEL GAUGEAPPLICATION:The KENCO Armored Level Gauge (Model ESP or ST) is a rugged tubular liquid level gauge that offers maximum impact from mechanical stress and impact. Product benefits include lower installation costs, reduced maintenance, unobstructed visual indication for your application. The gauge is adaptable to many different types of process connections. Armored frame and 90 degree instrument tees are available in a wide variety of materials. Wetted materials are limited to the O-Ring material, PTFE sight tube holder, and glass. The level gauge will operate in a medium pressure range up to 500 PSI. KSF CAST BODY SIGHT FLOW INDICATORS

APPLICATION:

KSF cast body sight flow indicators have a heavy duty cast construction to handle pressure and temperature requirements. A glass window on either side provides product visibility. Mechanical indicators to enhance the visibility of the media include flappers, rotors, and drip tubes. The cast body and threaded or flanged connections meet ANSI standards. Standard materials of construction are carbon steel, 316 SS, ductile iron, and bronze. Hastelloy C 276 and alloy 20 can also be supplied. Please consult the factory for pricing.

The KSF Sight Flows are available in two series – ST and HT. The ST series is designed for standard temperatures and pressures while the HT series is designed for higher pressures and temperatures. Please see specifications for exact ratings of each.

PRODUCT FEATURES:

No Leak Design
The radial sealing method and the bolt-on body design provides years of service with no torquing maintenance required.

ANSI Rated
The cast body and the threaded or flanged connection meet ANSI standards. Flanged models conform to standard ANSI mounting dimensions; threaded models are provided with standard NPTF threads. All flanged units are supplied with 150 lbs. raised-face flange. The 2″, 3″, and 4″ can be supplied with 300 lb. flanges.

3 Year Warranty
All KSF sight flow indicators are guaranteed free from defects in material and workmanship for 3 years from date of shipment. If a unit fails within the first 3 years, Kenco will supply replacement parts or replace the unit at our expense.

PLAIN
Unit may be mounted in any direction and flow is bi-directional. Used to indicate easily visible fluids or lack of same to detect color clarity of turbulence of fluids.

FLAPPER
Units may be mounted either horizontally or vertically with upward flow. These units are used with clear fluids.

ROTOR
Unit my be mounted in any direction. Right to left flow is standard. Specify if left to right flow is required. Rotor is highly visible. The units are designed for clear, translucent or dark fluids. Standard rotor material is Delrin. PTFE is available as an option.

DRIP TUBE
Units are designed for vertical application only with downward flow. They are recommended for intermittent gravity or extremely low flow rates.
